If you find yourself at dinner this Thanksgiving day with family members bemoaning the murder of Michael Brown--the 300-pound thug attorney Benjamin Crump called that “little black boy”--ask them what Officer Darren Wilson should not have done.

Remember, you will have an advantage over them. You will have examined the evidence and read the transcript of Wilson’s grand jury testimony. They will mostly just have watched CNN or NBC or CBS.

They are the loudmouths hassling the waitress. You’re the Kung Fu master at the end of the bar. For the sake of your sweet old mom who hates controversy, dismember them gently.

Wilson found himself in that admittedly dangerous neighborhood by himself because he was responding to a call from a frantic mother with a sick infant only a few months old. Should he not have taken that call?

As Wilson drove down Canfield he saw two men, one very large with a marijuana symbol on his socks, walking down the middle of the street obstructing traffic. Should Wilson not have rolled down his window and said, “Why don’t you guys walk on the sidewalk?”

When the two men, Michael Brown and Dorian Johnson, ignored his request, and the large one, Brown, answered, “F*** what you have to say,” should Wilson not have paid a little more attention to him?

When Wilson realized that Brown matched the description of the fellow who had just robbed cigarillos from a nearby market on West Florissant and assaulted the clerk, and that in fact he was openly carrying the cigarillos, should Wilson, wary of profiling young black men, not have called for back up?

And while he was waiting, should Wilson not have parked his car at an angle his car to keep Brown and Johnson contained?

In trying to exit his car, and beckoning Brown, should Wilson not have been alarmed when Brown responded, “What the f*** are you going to do about it?” while pushing him back into his car?

When the 6’ 4”, 300-pound Brown ignored Wilson’s request to get back and instead started punching him in the face through the open window, should Wilson not have begun to think that his health and perhaps his life were in jeopardy?

After reviewing his other options—all of them ineffective under the circumstances—should Wilson not have pulled his gun? Having pulled it, should he not have warned Brown, “Get back or I’m going to shoot you?”

When Brown, boldly high on marijuana, replied, “You are too much of a pussy to shoot me” and grabbed for the gun, should Brown not have considered that his life was at risk?

As Brown shoved the barrel of the gun against Wilson’s hip and struggled to get his finger inside the trigger guard, should Wilson not have considered himself in imminent danger of being shot?

After Wilson fired the gun into the car door and Brown continued to attack him, should he not have felt fully within his rights to shoot Brown then and there?

After a second shot was fired and Brown took off running, should Wilson not have exited the car and chased him?

Given the heat of the moment, should Wilson have shot the fleeing Brown when it would have been easy to do so? No, he should not have, and he did not.

When Brown stopped running, and Wilson stopped following at a respectful distance, should he not have told Brown to get down on the ground?

When Brown disregarded the command, turned towards Wilson and started coming back at him, should Wilson not have realized that at this point it was likely either his life or Brown’s?

When the enraged 300-pounder continued to charge like an angry rhino and ignore Wilson’s command to get down, should Wilson not have fired?

While backpedaling, Wilson paused to see if his shots had any effect. When Brown continued to charge, should Wilson not have resumed firing?

Or should Wilson have holstered his pistol and offered to duke it out like a man? Or, if CNN’s Don Lemon had his way, should he have dropped his gun and started singing “Give Peace a Chance?”

I know. Your sissy in-laws will ask you why anyone should take the word of a killer cop like Darren Wilson over the word, say, of perp Dorian Johnson.

Tell them they don’t have to. Consider the testimony of one of the half dozen African American witnesses who corroborated Wilson’s story.

Wrote one witness in cursive—explain what that word means if your in-laws are Miami-Dade alums--“The cop just stood there. Dang if that kid didn’t start running right at the cop like a football player. Head down.”

The same witness told of hearing “3 bangs,” but, he added, “the big kid wouldn’t stop.”
