Spending the week in Ireland, I happened to catch on the Irish TV network RTE a news clip about President Barack Obama’s White House meeting with Irish Prime Minister--or “Taoiseach” in Irish—Enda Kenny.

After Kenny graciously presented Obama with a large, framed certificate of Irish ancestry—the president is 1/32 Irish--Obama, off script and thoroughly off key, joked that he would have to hang it up in a place of honor “on the wall beside his birth certificate.” The reporters in the small audience responded with knowing laughter.

The fact of the matter is that we know more about the origins of Obama’s great-great-great grandfather, who reliably hails from the village of Moneygall, than we do about Obama himself. Even Obama supporters have to worry about the legitimacy of Obama’s birth certificate.

When I went online to confirm the exact wording of the quote, I could not find a single reference to it save the one posted by RTE, and even the RTE reporter did not quote it word for word.

The RTE noted that the remark “was a reference to the campaign by some of his political opponents challenging his birth in the US.”

“It was also a reminder,” wrote the RTE reporter accurately, “that this is an election year and that Mr. Obama has a ferocious battle ahead as the economy remains fragile and his opponents get ready to challenge him on all fronts.”

Given that this is an election year, one has to wonder why no American reporter thought to comment on his birth certificate remark or, as far as I know, show it on American TV. The Americans might have understood, as the Irish did not, that Kenny and his Irish colleagues had just been insulted.

In fact, however, the Irish would have refused to be insulted even if they had understood his remark. In the uncontested words of one Irish columnist, Obama is “wildly popular” in Ireland. The Irish would and could have found ways to excuse everything Obama has done or said.

Lest Obama fans take too much encouragement from the Irish appreciation of Obama, they should be aware that the city in which I am staying, Galway, is currently planning to build a public monument to Che Guevara. It is not that the Irish are communists. No, they are mostly just clueless.
